Custom TOMS shoes for Olio United

Olio United celebrates their 1st year in business with a big party and custom TOMS shoes by various artists in town. I got to do a couple pair, as did Erik Railton, Jill Bliss, Max Erdenberger and a handful of others. TOMS shoes are cool - because for every pair that they sell, they give one away to folks that need shoes.

Lost in the Shuffle

One of the projects in the past few months that I'm very excited about is this concept and site for the film Call + Response. It's an artist's response to issues surrounding modern-day slave trade - exploiting human beings for financial profit. I worked on an A-team from the Portland underground to create a site that uses data visualization to map people's emotions surrounding one of the biggest issues in the world: slavery.

In the end - this feature kind of got buried on their site - but it deserves a lot more credit than it got.

Musicfest NW 2008 - live the dream

Go to this festival. If you don't you might end up at this festival which would be lame. Oh yeah, I made this ad with the generous help of these people: David Cress, Brad and crew at Food Chain and the talented men of Kamp Grizzly.

Hand-drawn windows for Olio United.

Everyone knows that nothing screams "Sale!", "L@@K!" or "Free!" like black & white. So that's exactly what I went for. Olio United is a place worth visiting.

You Are Loved.

Singing Serpent - Reel 11

Hand painted packaging and a painted animation for the DVD menu. Fun stuff. Adam Long worked on the animation with me. Singing Serpent is seriously råwking the world of composed music for ads.

Call + Response

Final designs for Call + Response. Love where this ended up. Most proud of the interactive project that I worked on with the great crew at NORTH. Hopefully this project gets some attention. www.callandresponsemovie.com

Perfect Pairing.

Pitched this client with a photographer friend of mine, Corey Arnold. In the end, this large volume vineyard thought it would be more interesting to talk about the soil that most of the grapes they use aren't grown in. And these capture such a story...

(Obviously, I'm not bitter.)

Sweet! Another TV spot for MFNW

MFNW (that's Portland for Musicfest Northwest). A great annual festival underwritten by the folks over at Willamette Week. Many thanks to Matt McCormick who directed this spot - and Food Chain Films who produced it. In case you were wondering, this spot may have had a direct effect on John Mayer's success.

One side note: At one point I was going to have signage moved through the sky as with fake helicopter thingys. Glad nobody knows about that.

Poster design for Call + Response

Call + Response, A Concert to End Slavery started as a couple live concert videos and grew into a full length feature film. And the list grew and this is who is now a part of it. Dr. Cornell West, Madeleine Albright, Julia Ormand, Darryl Hannah, Ashley Judd, Imogen Heap, Moby, Switchfoot, Rocco Deluca and the Burden, Talib Kweli, Natasha Bedingfield, Matisyahu, Cold War Kids. So this didn't end up being the final design, more on that later.

Games of chance?
Poker Poster
Well yes, yes I do. Back when Family was alive and kickin' David Shrigley did this poster for us to let the world know about our monthly poker game. You probably know of David Shrigley from his other work, including my favorite, his amazing music video for blur.

If you happen to be in Dundee,UK between 18 November 2006 - 21 January 2007, you can see the poker poster as part of his poster show at DCA.
What the?
Made a fun advertisment for Musicfest NW. Trevor booked an amazing festival this year and then let us run wild with the TV. Food Chain Films produced. Jon Humphries directed and Greg Schmitt was the DP. Oh yeah - Kamp Grizzly did the motion graphics at the end.

Fork&Spoon was a small start-up catering company when we first met . Now it's one of preimer event design/catering companies in San Francisco. I've been fortunate enough to design and create all of their branding and advertising since day one. See quotes from Martha Stewart and Allison Arrieff (editor in chief, Dwell Magazine) in their new website that we just launched.

These are some of my favorites. Big thanks to Dan and Jared for the Kamp Grizzly love. Makin' the dream happen.

Small is good too.
OK, sometimes you have to do the small 1-color newspaper ads. Sometimes when you're the art director your headline sticks and everyone loves it. Sweet. I mean how much more fun can you have with a gas meter?

This is a packaging project that I did for Singing Serpent in early 2006. Singing Serpent makes music for TV ads. They've had an unprecedented response to their DVDs since they started sending them out. It's probably due to the fact that they're one of the most creative music houses in North Amercia. That's my opinion. I've created nearly all of their packaging. That's a fact.
Rest easy. Now gambling safe.

I loved creating these spots for the Oregon Lottery. Vance Malone directed these spots. Vance is now with Hungry Man.

R.I.P. Family (2005-2006)
animation
"It's not a sprint it's a marathon."
Well, this one turned into a shuttle run. One hell of a good/short run with my copywriter friend Jason Pollock. Some big ideas, a few solid base knocks and a great commercial with a deaf girl. I'll confess, Jason was up 6 games to 3 in 21 Football. That sucks. Good luck Pollock.

Brought on to help Allstate Foundation reach teenage kids with a very important message: Don't act like a teenager when you drive. So we decided to hit 'em right where it hurts: the classroom. You know the lame, preachy, dated, boring high school posters? Ok these are lame, preachy, dated, funny high school posters.
Evidently Scratch-its make good gifts.
Don't celebrate important holidays by giving a loved one a worthless piece of paper. We recommend celebrating less-important holidays this way. I worked as hard as a pack mule on this project with my writer/friend Caspian. Asterik Studio pitched in too. Campaign was recognized in the 2005 Rosey Award book.
